On average, one in five people in the world are interested in the “game of millions”
Almost every fifth inhabitant of the Earth follows football. These are the data of a large-scale marketing research conducted by YouGov Global Profiles. Experts evaluated the largest markets, and the conclusions were quite unexpected.
Thus, according to analysts, in terms of interest in football, the Republic of South Africa is in the lead, where four out of nine respondents said that they actively follow football tournaments (44%). In second place is Portugal – where an average of two out of five respondents confirmed their interest in football (38%).
Quite high rates are in Poland (36%), Indonesia (there was an online sample, 36%), Greece (35%), Switzerland (34%), Belgium (34%), Colombia (32%), Ireland (32% ), Egypt and Spain (32%).
At the same time, as analysts note, football still has room for growth, and FIFA recognizes this. This is the focus of the efforts of the organization, which seeks to develop football in huge markets such as the United States, India and China.
Global Profiles data shows that the sport has gained significant popularity among urban Indians and among the Chinese population. In both giant Asian markets, a fifth of consumers say they regularly watch or follow football (22% in India, 19% in China).
But in the United States, despite significant progress in recent years, the indicators are not so rosy. America was in last place in the table, which included 40 countries. Every tenth American follows football.
