Milan comeback against Inter Milan would be ‘miracle’ in Champions League

Despite the Champions League being marked by great comebacks, in its last ten editions, the semifinals did not provide great changes; Milan needs ‘miracle’

A turn of the Milan Against the Inter Milan can be considered a true miracle of Champions League. In the last decade, the competition has turned out to be unforgivable when it comes to the semifinals. O sportbuzz separated some interesting figures from the ten most recent editions, which may leave the Rossoneri a little discouraged.

In a survey carried out since the 2012/13 season, in just five opportunities a team managed to open two or more goals difference in the first leg. This data alone already makes Inter Milan’s victory last Wednesday, 10, something to be celebrated and celebrated by many. The feat achieved by the Nerazzurri has been achieved by 50% of the teams that have played in the last ten Champions League semi-finals.

But there is another piece of data that could make Milan fans even more suspicious of a comeback on Tuesday. Of the five teams that managed to open two or more goals of advantage in a Champions League semifinal, only one managed to turn the confrontation around and leave with a vacancy for the Champions League decision. That is, this means that only 20% of the clubs that came out ahead with two or more goals achieved the feat.

But it wasn’t ‘clubs’, it was just a team that reached that mark in the last ten Champions League semi-finals. The only comeback that happened in the 2018/19 season and is considered one of the greatest in history. That’s because Barcelona opened 3-0, but took a big turnaround at Anfield Road and saw Liverpool apply a historic 4-0.

In the other four opportunities in which a team got an advantage of two or more goals apart, the team won the place in the Champions League final. In 2012/13, for example, in the first leg, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich played 4-1 and 4-0 against Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively. On the way back, both kept the difference and went to the final.

In 2014/15, Barcelona, who beat Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg and also advanced to the Champions League final after achieving a great advantage. The same happened in the 2016/17 and 2021/22 seasons. Respectively, Juventus eliminated Monaco with a 2-0 in the first leg, and Liverpool, who beat Villarreal by 2-0 and went to the Champions League final.

That is, the classic between Inter Milan and Milan has not yet been defined, but the Champions League usually follows standards in its final stretch. If the Rossoneri’s comeback comes, the result could be considered one of the greatest in recent Champions League history. But this we will only be able to know from 4 pm (Brasília time), this Tuesday, 16.
