San Diego to become 30th MLS club in 2025

The team won a license in the fight against Las Vegas

San Diego will become the 30th club MLS in 2025. The team won a license dispute with Las Vegas.

The club is partially owned by British-Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour. The company is also co-owned by the Sikuan Tribe of the Kumeyai, a native Californian tribe. The project is also assisted by well-known baseball player Manny Machado, who plays for the San Diego Padres team.

“As soon as I explained to the Sicuan tribe what the Rights to Dream project was about, they told me that it was their people’s history of over 12,000 years of overcoming adversity and finding untapped talent. It was like a quick love marriage and then it became a business deal,” said San Diego coach Tom Vernon.

The team will perform at the Snapdragon Stadium, which can accommodate 35,000 spectators. Former Los Angeles FC president Tom Penn has been named athletic director.

Los Angeles became the MLS champion in 2022, defeating Philadelphia Union in the final. Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference and Cincinnati in the East are leading this season.
