Director of Obolon: Why play in the First League if none of the teams can count on promotion?

Brewers criticized UPL

Director Obolon Oleksandr Reznichenko commented on the decision Ukrainian Premier League not to play transitional matches between the elite division and First League this year. The functionary also spoke about the UPL format for next season.

“The UPL management told me that 16 clubs will take part in the new season. The issue of expanding the format is not considered. Obolon did not take part in the discussion of these points. It seems to me that we were simply humiliated in this situation,” Reznichenko said.

“We contacted the Premier League with a question about transitional matches. In addition, the club has developed two options for holding the championship of 18 teams and submitted them to the leadership of the UPL and PFL.”

“Next season, Desna and Mariupol are planning to return to the big leagues. They will take the places of the 15th and 16th teams in the standings according to the results of the next championship. Why then play in the PFL if none of the teams can count on a promotion?

The 2021/22 football season in Ukraine ended ahead of schedule due to the invasion of Russian troops into the country. In the final standings of the First League, Obolon took fourth place and was supposed to play in transitional matches, but they decided not to play play-offs.

Metalist and Kryvbas went directly to the UPL. At the same time, places in the Premier League were reserved for Desna and Mariupol, as the infrastructure of the clubs was damaged due to Russian bombing.

Tentatively, the start of the new season in Ukraine is scheduled for August. UPL matches can be played on the territory of Ukraine and Poland.
