At the same time, applications were submitted by Belarusian athletes and officials
International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has not registered any Russian athlete or official representative for Cuban Grand Prixthe closest qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics.
Earlier, the IWF decided to return the Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status. To do this, the athletes had to submit an application with a declaration of neutrality regarding the war against Ukraine.
It is reported that by the deadline of May 15, not a single Russian has sent applications to participate in the Cuban Grand Prix. At the same time, 13 Belarusian athletes and six members of the staff filed declarations. All of them were registered.
Note that in order to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, athletes must take part in at least three major competitions out of five: the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 and 2024 European Championships, as well as the Cuban and Qatar Grand Prix. The Russians have already missed two tournaments (World Cup 2022 and European Championship 2023).
Recall that Ukraine faces disqualification in weightlifting at the 2024 Olympics. Three athletes (Ruslan Kozhakin, Bogdan Taranenko and Alina Marushchak) passed positive doping tests during the pre-Olympic period.
