The International Football Federation again allowed the legionnaires to suspend contracts with football clubs from Ukraine.

All legionnaires who had contracts with Ukrainian clubs at the beginning of the mass invasion of Kremlin troops may not return to the location of their teams.

FIFA allowed for another year to suspend contracts because of the war. At the same time, the new consent does not apply to new agreements signed with clubs in Ukraine and Russia after February 24, 2022. The corresponding decision in the International Football Federation is published on its own website.

It specifically states that foreign players and coaches will continue to have the right to unilaterally suspend contracts with clubs that are part of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) or the Russian Football Union (RFU) until June 30, 2024, provided that the clubs will notify this in writing before 1 July 2023.

Foreign players and coaches who, despite the war in Ukraine, have decided to come, return or not leave the territory of Ukraine or Russia will not be able to rely on the revised 7th Schedule to suspend the current contract.

Now the 7th application will not apply to:

– foreign players who are still registered with a club that is part of the UAF or RFU;

– foreign coaches who at that moment still provide their services to a club that is part of the UAF or RFU;

– employment contracts of foreign football players or coaches terminated or extended with clubs that are part of the UAF or RFU after March 7, 2022.

To prevent abuse, players whose contracts have been suspended in accordance with Schedule 7 may not, during the suspension:

– be the object of a transfer (permanent or on a leasehold basis) on a paid basis;

– sign a new contract with another club that is part of the UAF or RFU.

Recall that this rule caused anger on the part of Ukrainian clubs. In particular Minerwho suffered the most from the change, filed complaints against FIFA seeking compensation for the damage caused.

CAS had earlier dismissed the claim MinerThe Pitmen then complained to the European Commission.
