South American football’s governing body has reprimanded FIFA’s head of global development Arsène Wenger to suggest that Africa’s infrastructure is inadequate to develop talent and that Europe is the only continent where rising stars can reach their full potential.
CONMEBOL said it had sent a letter to FIFA to “condemn Wenger’s comments”.
Wenger expressed his opinion earlier this month that if Kylian Mbappé had been born in Cameroon, he would not have reached his current level. “There’s Europe and there’s the rest of the world,” Wenger added. “The latter needs help, otherwise we’re going to miss a lot of talent.”
– Wenger’s remarks, in addition to being uncharacteristically ignorant of the valuable contribution of African players to world football, and particularly in Europe, show a slanderous moment that hides the efforts of football players and sports institutions that are not located in Europe. Just like Africans, we South Americans have first-hand knowledge of this behavior, which comes from the belief that peace begins and ends in Europe,” CONMEBOL said in a statement.
