After new case of racism, LaLiga demands changes and asks for punishment

In an official note released, LaLiga stated that it feels powerless with the lack of punishment in cases of racism in games of the Spanish competition.

The organization that organizes the Spanish Championship took the position two days after the Brazilian striker suffered again with attacks from rival fans in league games. The last episode took place on Sunday, 21, in the duel between Real Madrid and Valence.

In the note, the organization stated frustration with the lack of sanctioning measures by sports bodies and public authorities in the face of cases of intolerance. According to the statement, LaLiga will request the amendment of Law 19/2007, which addresses violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.

According to Spanish justice, LaLiga can only collaborate in identifying and denouncing racist behavior. The punishment is not applicable to the organization. The entity there formally requests the amendment of Laws 19/2007 and 39/2022.

“For this reason, some time ago, LaLiga decided to take a step forward in its legal strategy and go straight to the courts. However, despite this, giving LaLiga greater sanctioning capacity would be an efficient tool in the fight against racism in sport”, says an excerpt from the statement.
