Andrea Pirlo arrives in Turkish football after a year without managing

The former midfielder was announced by Fatih Karagumruk’s club this Sunday. It will be his second experience as a coach, after an irregular stint at Juventus, where he spent just one season.

With an image characterized by The Godfather, Andrea Pirlo was announced as the new coach of Turkish Fatih Karagumruk. It will be the second coaching experience for the former midfielder, who made his debut on the bench in charge of Juventus in the 2020-21 season, where he won the Super Cup and Cup of Italy.

The fate of the former midfielder had been the subject of speculation for several days. On Friday, some European media took for granted his arrival in the Turkish selection, which was confirmed this Sunday morning.

At the helm of the Vecchia Signora, Pirlo added a performance of 72%, translated into 38 games led, 23 wins, nine draws and six defeats. Those weren’t bad numbers, but failing to win Serie A and going out in the knockout stages of the Champions League prompted his dismissal.

The Italian’s bond with Karagumruk will only last for a year. Last season, the side that will be led by the 2006 German champions finished eighth in the Turkish top flight. with 16 wins, nine draws, thirteen losses, which led them to garner 57 points.

Now they plan to reach European competitions. It was the word for Pirlo, who will be presented this Tuesday at a press conference. “The world-renowned footballer recently coached Juventus, one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Having also had Champions League experience with Juventus (…) We welcome our coach Andrea Pirlo and wish him a lot of success”, they wrote on the club’s social networks.

The cast, belonging to the city of Istanbul, is not among Turkey’s greats. Indeed, he returned to the Super League in 2020, after 36 years without being in the honor division.
