Always on the border of glory: the permanent trauma of Marco Reus

The German midfielder has seven Bundesliga runners-up in defense of Borussia Dortmund; So far he has never managed to conquer the highest Teutonic competition. Ten years on from the Negriamarillos’ historic Champions League campaign, he is the only figure who has never left the club in search of trophies with other clubs.

Marco Reus wanted it to be a special Saturday. This weekend, the historic Borussia Dortmund midfielder was looking to dedicate his years at Signal Iduna Park by winning a prized and elusive trophy: the Bundesliga. In his decade with the yellow vest, he was never able to consecrate himself as the monarch of Germany’s highest test.

Since joining the cast Die Schwarzgelben, they accumulate seven finalists in the German first division. This weekend they had a golden opportunity to break Bayern Munich’s ten-year hegemony. However, they only drew against Mainz. A victory left them as champions without watching any other game. This does not happen. But the feeling is even more awkward considering that the Bavarians won in the last minute of the settlement. With both teams leveling their duels, the celebration went to Dortmund.

On the definition day, Marco Reus came on in the 40th minute of the first half, replacing the injured Karim Adeyemi. However, he failed to unbalance. Playing little more than full time, the Rot Weiss player Ahlen had positive numbers in his turnovers, but proved harmless in attack, faced with the good withdrawal of the visit. It was only with the entry of Giovanni Reyna, who provided two assists, that they managed to equalize a game that looked like a loss. Of course, it did not reach them.

Pay loyalty?

The 2012/13 season, precisely the 33-year-old’s first at Borussia Dortmund, was an unforgettable journey for fans of the black and yellow team. Led by Jürgen Klopp, they reached the Champions League final. They rose to the top of a complex group which included Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City.

Then, in the Round of 16, they knocked out Shakhtar Donetsk. In the round of the best eight, they eliminated Manuel Pellegrini’s Málaga in a highly controversial duel. But the big blow came in the semi-finals, eliminating Madrid, then led by José Mourinho. Unfortunately for their aspirations, in the final they succumbed to another German, Bayern Munich.

This Dortmund team had high caliber personalities. There were Mats Hummels, İlkay Gündoğan, Robert Lewandowski and Reus himself. Today, the defender is also part of the cast of Gelbe Wand, but he had an outing in Bavaria during which he managed to increase his record. The midfielder shines at Manchester City while the marksman defends Barcelona, having been Bayern’s top scorer for several seasons. The three went in search of trophies and they did.

Marco Reus, on the other hand, remained at Dortmund. At the time, he was surveyed by other greats from the old continent, but he preferred to continue in the place he called home. Of course, today the starting options are few and this season he has been relegated to a secondary role in the team led by Edin Terzić.

The wounds, the great trauma

If there is another element that has always caused discomfort in the former Mönchengladbach, it is the injuries. Physical issues have always taken their toll on the midfielder. Without going any further, he was absent from two World Cups for them. It’s no surprise that his biggest regret in football is missing out on the global event in Brazil 2014 where the Teutonic team was champion.

In the past five years alone, he’s been out 11 times due to injury. Almost an average of two long absences per year. The one that took him out of the hot contest in South America nine seasons ago was a left ankle ligament complication.

Despite everything, Reus continues. At the end of April, Borussia Dortmund announced the contract extension of its reference. “In the home stretch of the season, Borussia Dortmund and its captain are sending an important signal : The Dortmund-born man who first moved to BVB’s F-Jugend in the mid-1990s when he was six, has renewed his expiring contract extended by a year until the end of the season 2023/24. From the summer he will start his twelfth season as a professional with the black and yellow jersey,” they said.

In a decade, the midfielder won five trophies with Borussia: three Super Cups and two German Cups. The Bundesliga continues to be an aspiration that cannot be achieved.
