This is PSG’s 11th title. However, it would be strange to expect a different result from Christophe Galtier’s team. The difference in resources, finances and composition between the Parisians and the rest of the league squad is huge. That’s why even lame PSG won the title and didn’t feel any serious competition from their rivals.
Despite the trophy, a lot of questions have piled up for PSG, the coach and the players this season. Moreover, such a season could well be qualified as a failure, given the ambitions of the club’s management. Therefore, it makes sense to figure out exactly what went wrong.
Weak bench
PSG has a very powerful team, where almost every name is a big star. The problems start around the middle of the season, when for one reason or another the optimal composition is not met. This became very clear during the Champions League qualifiers when, despite the star-studded squad, the academy students had to be released as a substitute. Of course, injuries also affect this, but it’s high time for PSG to review their personnel policy and start recruiting a more balanced squad, where there will be two strong players in each position. This should be a top priority for club management.
The laziness of the main stars
More than once, not twice, and not five times, experts and analysts have pointed out PSG’s problems in defense. The main thing is that the star trio of attackers – Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Leo Messi – do not work in defense on an equal footing with everyone else, they are practically excluded from the pressure. And if less cool teams often forgive such an impression, then the giants will tear for it. However, Bayern demonstrated this in the Champions League. Of course, the quality of each of these three is so high that they can often offset with goals the negative effect they have on the bigger picture, but as this season has shown, more and more opponents are finding ways to shut down PSG stars.
Failure in the Champions League and the National Cup
It’s no secret that the idea of a solution for Qatari club owners is the Champions League. This is what both the players and the representatives of PSG claim. And each time it ends the same. As a rule, Paris looks great in the group, knocking out opponents there in rink mode, and in the playoffs stumbles over the first opponent of more or less equal level. This time, PSG managed to give Benfica first place in the Champions League group and, as a result, immediately fell under Bayern.
The same story happened in the national cups. In the Super Cup, the Parisians faced Nantes without any problem (4-0), but in the Cup, they already took off in the 1/8 final against Marseille (1-2). Yes, not the weakest opponent, but in any case, it’s a disastrous performance for a top club.
Add to that the problems that have arisen in the dressing room over the course of the season. PSG often appears in various scandals. At the end of the season, Leo Messi was dropped from the squad and then returned. Such a mess also does not help a stable atmosphere in the team.
PSG and Christophe Galtier have their work cut out for them this summer. In this club they are easily dismissed even after the championship, so the next title will not become an indulgence. PSG need the Champions League, but for that they will have to work hard and, preferably, quickly forget the past season, which was very torn.
