Mendilibar: We didn’t practice penalties, we just had confidence in the players

Sevilla coach becomes the oldest manager to win the Europa League

Sevilla head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar commented on the outcome of the final Europa League with Roma.

“I am happy to be here, to win with a club that has gone through a difficult time. When Roma opened the scoring, it looked like it would be very difficult to score back. We were able to quickly level the score in the second half and that gave us the strength to keep fighting for the win.”

“Taking a penalty in training and then taking a penalty in front of 60,000 fans is not the same thing. We have not practiced in any of the previous rounds. We had confidence in the people who were going to participate in the penalty shoot-out.”

Mendilibar took charge of Sevilla in March after the Nervions sacked Jorge Sampaoli due to poor results. The 62-year-old specialist became the oldest coach to win the Europa League.

Sevilla have won the Europa League/UEFA Cup for a record seventh time. The Spanish club has previously won the tournament in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020. Note that the Nervionians have never lost in the finals of the Europa League.
