Botafogo even managed to win in normal time and sent the decision to penalties, where Athletico was superior and ranked
This Wednesday, the 31st, Botafogo received Athletico-PR, at Nilton Santos, for the second leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. Glorioso was surprised by the team from Paraná in the first match, which achieved an impressive comeback after losing 2-0. Thus, Luís Castro’s men needed a victory to seek classification.
The first threat of the game was Athletico’s, in a foul taken by Canobbio, but it was Botafogo who opened the scoring at Engenhão. In the 17th minute, Tiquinho Soares made a great combination with Victor Sá, pushed to the right foot and finished low, in the corner, to open the scoring and leave everything equal on aggregate.
After the alvinegro goal, the game became very physical and the final stretch of the first half was marked by the high number of fouls committed by both teams. The break in rhythm in the duel reduced the number of submissions and the score remained unchanged until the end of the first stage.
The second half was marked by good saves by goalkeeper Bento. In the ninth minute, Botafogo got a beautiful little table at the entrance to the area and Tiquinho Soares adjusted it to Júnior Santos, who finished, but the Athletico goalkeeper made the save. Then, at 18, Victor Sá took advantage of a rebound and put his foot in the middle of the goal, but also stopped at the opposing goalkeeper. The two teams failed to change the scoreboard and the dispute went to penalties.
On penalties, Athletico beat Botafogo 4-2 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil!
