Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) granted the appeal Boris van der Voorst on the decision of the BIIU not to allow him to run for president International Boxing Association (I.B.A.).
The CAS ruled that van der Voorst was eligible to run for head of the IBA. Today’s court decision is expected to force the IBA to hold new elections for the organization’s president. This issue will be considered on June 24 in Lausanne at a meeting of the IBA Board of Directors.
Van der Voorst and a number of other candidates were not allowed to run due to campaigning outside the election period. However, CAS found that re-elected IBA President Umar Kremlev was guilty of the same violation, but he was not removed from the election.
In May, Kremlev was re-elected president of the IBA. He was the only candidate in the elections. Recall that the President of the Boxing Federation of Ukraine Volodymyr Prodivus joined the Board of Directors of the IBA.
Previously, van der Voorst demanded from the IBA a more decisive response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the disclosure of financial statements under the sponsorship agreement with Russia’s Gazprom.
The IBA is an independent organization that sanctioned boxing at the amateur level. Founded in 1946.
