THE GAME!
The match started in full swing and, after just two minutes of ball rolling, the Costa Ricans managed to open the scoring! In the first descent to the attack, on the left side, Bennett overcame the marking and crossed low to Campbell, who appeared between the defenders and played weakly, to send the left corner of the goalkeeper, who did not reach the ball: 1 to 0!
After leaving behind on the scoreboard, New Zealand created good chances that led to danger for Navas’ goal. In the 10th minute, after the ball was raised in the area, Greive arrived hitting at first, but sent it to the right of the goal. Then, at 12, it was Garbett’s turn to tap out. And the best chance came in the 14th minute, when Bell crossed low on the left and Wood deflected it slightly, but Keylor Navas managed to defend and then came out at the attacker’s foot to avoid the rebound.
Until, in the 38th minute, New Zealand managed to reach the equalizer, but saw VAR put an end to the party! Garbett advanced down the left and crossed into the box. The ball looked harmless, but Borges couldn’t take it out and it was left clean for Wood to complete it to the back of the goal. However, the referee saw a foul by Garbett on Óscar Duarte at the start of the move and disallowed the goal: 1-0 at the end of the first half!

The Costa Ricans came back from the break with a slightly less defensive posture and ended up being benefited, in the 23rd minute, by the expulsion of Barbarouses. The striker gave Calvo a criminal cart and at first was cautioned with a yellow card. However, VAR was advised to watch the video and, after analyzing the play, sent the player off the field.
Still, with one player short, New Zealand pressed until the end, betting all their chips on the air game, but stopped in the great performance of Keylor Navas, who turned into a real giant in the final stretch of the game. In the 31st minute, Lewis risked a bomb from outside the area, but the Costa Rica goalkeeper shot across the back line.
New Zealand fought until the end, but did not get the equalizing goal and ended up defeated by Costa Rica, being out of the World Cup once again. The classified, in turn, join Germany, Japan and Spain, in group E of the Qatar World Cup.
