Akinfeev: “A lot of people say it’s time to finish. But I’m not going to finish and I will at least make my family happy with my game”

Guardian of Moscow CSKA Igor Akinfeev said he plans to continue his career at least until the end of the current contract.

Akinfeev is 37 years old, he has spent his entire career at CSKA, the goalkeeper’s current contract is valid until June 30, 2024. On Sunday, Akinfeev helped the army team win the Russian Cup, parrying two hits during a penalty shootout. The main time of the meeting between CSKA and Krasnodar, which took place at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, ended with the score 1:1. In the penalty shootout, the army team turned out to be more accurate – 6:5.

– In general, the results of the season are “money” and the cup. Was this the ultimate dream?

– I won’t say it’s the ultimate dream. But if we take the path taken in recent years, it’s very good for the team, especially since they won the trophy. After the wins you always want more, but at the same time you understand that you have that and that has to be appreciated too. Therefore, it is very important to me that the team wins the silver and the cup, people felt what a trophy is. The guys were enslaved that for these 4-5 years nothing worked. Fourth, fifth, sixth places, a kind of back and forth, according to the same scenario, but here, it still broke through. In addition, Valentinych (Vladimir Fedotov) became a kind of helper, from the first year (as head coach) he motivated the team and they repaid by playing differently. All is relative. Second place and the cup for that second is probably our ceiling.

What are your plans for the next season? Are you playing well?

– And what plans can there be if I have a contract? A lot of people say it’s time to end. But I’m not going to finish and I’ll still at least make my family happy with my game, ”quotes the RFU Akinfeev site.

Akinfeev won the Russian Cup with CSKA for the seventh time.
