Abramovich refuses to hand over money from Chelsea sale to affected Ukrainians

The businessman plans to give half of the proceeds to the Russians

Ex-owner London Chelsea Roman Abramovich does not want to transfer to Ukraine the money that was received from the sale of the English club. The businessman plans to send half of the assets to the Russians.

The document on the transfer of 2.3 billion pounds to a special fund to help Ukraine must be signed by Abramovich, without the confirmation of the businessman, the assets cannot be sent to the affected Ukrainians.

The British government and the European Commission do not agree with the decision of the Russian businessman. The organizations are seeking to donate funds to several projects that will cover the recovery of healthcare, housing, education and agriculture in Ukraine.

It was reported that the UK government will transfer 2.3 billion pounds to Ukraine. The amount is the net proceeds from the sale of Chelsea by Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Abramovich acquired Chelsea in the summer of 2003. Since then, the London club has won the Champions League and the Europa League twice, and has also become the champion of England five times.

The businessman put the club up for sale after he came under sanctions from the British government due to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Last May, a consortium led by US businessman Todd Boely bought Chelsea for £4.25 billion (the equivalent of $5.25 billion).

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has been going on for 480 days.
