‘Deeply disappointed, but coach’s assessment not true’ – Courtois on Tedesco’s statement on Belgium national team goalkeeper’s departure

National team goalkeeper Belgium Thibaut Courtois responded to the words of the head coach of the national team through social networks Dominique Tedesco about the departure of the goalkeeper from the national team.

Earlier, Tedesco said Courtois was unhappy not to have been named captain in the absence of injured midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

The Belgians in Saturday’s match of the European Championship 2024 qualifying tournament against the Austrian national team (1:1) brought Romelu Lukaku onto the pitch with the captain’s armband.

– I was surprised to hear the head coach’s press conference, where he spoke biased and subjective about a private conversation we had after the game against Austria.

It’s neither the first nor the last time that I speak to a coach about locker room problems, but it’s the first time that someone dares to speak about it publicly.

I am deeply disappointed by this, but the coach’s assessment is not true. In our conversation, I encouraged him to make appropriate decisions to avoid situations that have negatively affected us in the past. He didn’t say that for his own benefit.

The coach has to decide who will be the captain, which I tried to convey. Unfortunately, I did not succeed.

I emphasize that I made no request and did not speak to Romelu Lukaku about this. I had no discussion about it with any of my teammates, as claimed.

Also, yesterday afternoon, I had an exam regarding a problem with my right knee. My club and national team medical team were in contact and reviewed all relevant documents when deciding to leave training camp, wrote Thibault Courtois.

From 2019 to 2021, Tedesco coached Spartak Moscow, and in February 2023 he led the Belgian national team.
