Vignola: There were always slaps in the Partenio tunnel

In an interview given Gazetta dello Sport former Avellino midfielder, Benjamin Vignolarecalls his experience in the green and white jersey: “On the afternoon of November 23, 1980, we beat Ascoli 4-2 in Partenio in Avellino, and in the late afternoon I was at home with friends. We watched the second half of the match. Serie A football match, I think it was Juve-Inter. At that time you saw such football, on Rai, between the 90th minute, the synthesis of the match and Domenica Sportiva. Around 19:30 there was an earthquake that would have caused so many deaths (almost three thousand, ed.). We ran into the street, many buildings collapsed, people screamed. I saw the first victims and the first wounded, and for two days, like others, I slept into the car. Here and there I returned to the apartment to get what I needed. Then Avellino took us to retreat. We had two away matches ahead of us in a row, we were preparing them in Tuscany. Since then, we have played great, we understood that we were the only oasis of rest for thousands of victims of the earthquake, and we survived well, despite the penalty (5 points for betting on football in 1979-80, approx. ed.).
