In Croatia, the Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric and former Liverpool and Zenit defender Dejan Lovren again accused of making false statements about financial dealings they had with a former Dynamo Zagreb manager convicted of multi-million dollar embezzlement and tax evasion.
Zdravko Mamić was found guilty in 2018 of several counts, including deriving illegal profits from player transfers during his time in charge of Croatian Dinamo, including deals that saw Modric move to Tottenham in 2008 and Lovren in “Lyon” in 2010. Mamich was sentenced. to 6.5 years in prison, but fled to Bosnia before the sentencing was announced.
Modric and Lovren have been accused of making false statements and failing to declare taxes on their multi-million dollar transfers to foreign clubs. But a Croatian court dropped those charges against them on the eve of the 2018 World Cup.
Now, however, Croatian prosecutors have said there is enough evidence that Croatian captain Modric and Lovren perjured themselves in the original trial.
If convicted of perjury, both players face six months to five years in prison. A trial date has not been set.
