“That coach, if you can call him a coach, wouldn’t let me play” – Despotovich on Kononov

Serbian striker Tula “Arsenal” George Despotovic told Sport24 that the former head coach of Tula Oleg Kononov did not give him match training and the club wanted to lower his salary.

– Last season in Russia didn’t work out for you, to say the least: 11 matches, 0 goals. How?

– I agree, the season is very bad. Played about 500 minutes – this is very little. There were problems: they weren’t allowed to play. The first four months I trained individually, then it was difficult to get in shape. This coach, Kononov, if you can call him a coach, did not train me.

Then the situation improved. A good coach has arrived. [Сторожук], with him immediately developed a normal relationship. But I still haven’t played as much as I would like.

– Is there a version why you weren’t put?

“Perhaps club policy. At the beginning of the year, there was talk of lowering my salary, but I held on. This is probably also the reason.

Despotovic, 31, joined Arsenal from Rubin in February 2022. He made 12 appearances last season.

Kononov left Arsenal in January 2023.
