Zenit should keep Vasiliev, according to Boris Rapoport

Former Zenit head coach Boris Rapoport told Sport Day after Day that Saint Petersburg defender Dmitry Vasilyev is doing well and should play at Zenit.

Earlier, Zenit deputy general manager Andrei Arshavin on said that the Saint Petersburg club could loan out Vasilyev. Zenit lost to Red Star in the PARI Premier Cup on Tuesday with a score of 1:2.

– Vasiliev made a good impression. I’ve known him for quite a while. He played decently at the academy at his age and in the youth team. The player is interesting, versatile, evolves in different positions: he can play central defender and, like yesterday, in midfield, he can play closer to the attack. Yesterday at the start maybe a bit nervous and made some mistakes but then he showed himself very well. In the first half he had a great counter tackle and he made a pass, after which they could have scored. In the second half, he simply built a goal: he opened well in the free zone, collected the ball, did not rush and put it under him, saw the space and rolled the ball under the blow of the Brazilian.

– How do you rate Vasiliev’s prospects in the main team?

– The question is how involved he will be in Barrios’ return or, for example, Kuzyaev’s return. Of course he has to play. And as far as I know, as Semak said, he looks good in the training process. I wouldn’t give it. He should now be in the cage, training with the main team and, if possible, practicing the game.

What about the rental option?

– It depends on the team, the tasks of this team and the specialist who works in it. It is heavy. A lot of our talented guys at the age of 19-20 leave and a lot don’t come back. It seems to me that Vasiliev is a gifted boy and it is worth working with him further here. In addition, it is possible to train in the game both for Zenit-2 and for the youth team, if it is not enough in the main team.

I think his main position is central midfielder. He can play in whatever position Barrios plays, but there may be situations where they can play together. In any case, he is quite a capable and gifted player, and Zenit should keep him, in my opinion. During that time we had a lot of talented players who started working in pre-season with the first team and then disappeared. It’s not good. I see that we will trust Semak. As soon as a player with certain abilities appears, of course, there is a desire to keep him.

I mean by working with great players like Malcom, Claudinho and others, he will even grow in the training process. He should have playing time, because the Russian Championship for Zenit is quite a simple tournament at the moment, it is not difficult and can allow the player to have enough playing time.

On July 9, Zenit will meet Fenerbahce. All the matches of the PARI Premier Cup tournament will be broadcast live on the and MATCH PREMIER TV channels.
