Everton and England midfielder Dele Alli In an interview with former Manchester United captain Gary Neville’s YouTube channel, he said he was sexually harassed when he was six and when he was eight he was selling drugs.
– It’s hard to talk about it, and it’s something I’ve been hiding for a long time – I’m scared to talk about it, but I think it’s the right thing to do. When I was six years old, I was sexually harassed. I was sexually assaulted by my mother’s friend, who was often at home. My mother was an alcoholic.
At seven I started smoking and at eight I started selling drugs. The old man told me that the police wouldn’t arrest a child on a bicycle, so I would ride with my soccer ball and have drugs under it.
When I was 11, I was hanged on a bridge… by a guy from a nearby estate. Male. And at the age of 12, I was adopted by a wonderful family.
After returning from Turkey, I was in a bad mental state and decided to go to a modern rehabilitation facility for the mentally ill. They deal with addiction, mental health and trauma because I felt it was time to do it. I came out three weeks ago. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t want to talk about it so soon, but right now I’m in a really good position to talk about it,” Alli said.
The footballer admitted that he independently tried to solve his internal problems through alcohol. Alli also revealed that he was addicted to sleeping pills.
“With our schedule, you have to be up early in the morning to train…so sometimes taking a sleeping pill and being ready for the next day is good. But when you’re as broken as I am, it can obviously backfire. I lost myself for a few years and turned my back on everyone. My family asked me to tell them what was wrong, and I just didn’t want to.
Alli noted that he is now focused on showing his best side professionally again.
“I know what I can do on the pitch. I think I showed people what I could do earlier, and now I have a feeling of being back, like before I moved to Tottenham, when I had a lot to prove and had such love and such a passion for football.
Alli has also played at club level for Tottenham and Besiktas. As a member of the English national team, he played 37 games in which he scored three goals.
