President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Diukov said that the tournament sponsor offered to remove one round from the final of the FONBET Way of Regions Cup of Russia.
— We liked the new format of the Russian Cup: it’s a bit more complicated than the tournament according to the Olympic system. But our sponsors and most fans voted for this format. As for its changes, we have some limitations. Our title sponsor Fonbet has approved this format: according to the terms of the contract, any changes are only possible in agreement with them.
Our sponsor has suggested canceling a game in the top bracket. We can argue with that, but this decision has its pros and cons. A club eliminated in the RPL Path final is discriminated against. Although all clubs and members of the executive committee, after looking into this matter, saw no serious injustice. The reform of the tournament is not significant, but everyone felt that this change would benefit the Russian Cup, Dyukov told the Championship.
In the 2022/23 season, the Russian Cup was played in a new format, the teams were divided into Path of Regions and Path of RPL. CSKA became the winner of the tournament.
