Former Barcelona president Bartomeu used club funds for personal gain – media

Former president of the Spanish football club”Barcelona Josep Maria Bartomeu is suspected of using club funds for personal gain, according to a Catalan police report cited by Cadena SER.

The document notes that most of the money paid under the contract with Amalgama Marketing was for certain projects, but about 26% of the payments were transferred to third parties. The payments were received by Bartomeu’s son’s business partner Josep Juanmarti, three journalists, as well as Amalgama chief Miquel Sambola. We are talking about an amount of 152 thousand euros. Payments to journalists were made in exchange for positive reviews on Bartomeu and partly on Barcelona.

Bartomeu hid these payments from an external auditor, who was commissioned to carry out an independent review of their accounts. The ex-president of the club has not yet been charged with corruption, the investigation being ongoing, but he had already been arrested and released on bail.

Bartomeu served as Barcelona’s president from January 23, 2014 until October 27, 2020. Now the club’s boss is Joan Laporta.
