About to start, the Women’s World Cup shows the evolution of the modality in the location, size and prizes of the competition; look
The Women’s World Cup is just a few hours away from its start, as the opening game will take place in Auckland, Australia, at dawn on Thursday, 20th, at 4 am (Brasília time). Its location, division of games and awards are some of the points that make this competition the biggest in history.
It will be the first time that the Women’s World Cup will take place in Oceania, in addition to being divided between two countries, as games will also take place in New Zealand. In addition, this competition will increase its size, with eight more teams compared to 2019, when it took place in France with 24 teams.
Another point, and one of the main ones, is the size of the prize pool, which promises to be equal to that of men at the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar. 110 million dollars (R$ 527 million) will be distributed, with 49 million going directly to all 736 athletes who will participate in the FIFA tournament.
The rest of this money will go to the respective participating associations, with the calculation being proportional to their performance in the competition. Individually, each player must earn at least BRL 144 thousand, being eliminated in the first phase, while the champions can reach a prize of BRL 1.3 million.
Even though sponsorships are still not at the same level as men’s, the advance was significant. The companies have already exhausted the quotas of sponsors at their headquarters, with Ambev, Cielo, Claro, Itaú and Visa. The broadcasts of the matches in Brazil will be handled by the Globo and SporTV channels, in addition to CazéTV broadcasting for free on Youtube.
