Madness in Belfast: Maltese Gzira and Glentoran set a new European Cup record by converting 27 penalty shoot-outs

In total, the teams shot 28 penalty kicks

The modest Maltese Gzira, whose highest achievement is still the country’s Cup won 50 years ago, entered the history of European football. True, on a par with the Northern Irish Glentoran, issuing an incredible series of post-match penalties in the first round of the Conference League qualification.

For two, the teams struck 28 penalty kicks, the first 27th of which turned out to be accurate! This is a new record for the number of penalties converted in European competition. The previous one was repeated two years ago, in the Europa League final of the 2020/2021 season, in which Villarreal won the series against Manchester United with a score of 11:10, and the teams converted 21 penalties, respectively. And earlier, in 1993, with the same score, Skonto beat Slovenian Olympia in a series of 11-meter post-matches.

This time Glentoran’s fatal hit was Leon Boyd, one of six players who twice broke the 11-meter – Gzira goalkeeper David Kassar coped with it, allowing his club to overcome the first qualifying round of European competition for the third time in history.

It should be noted that in terms of the total number of post-match penalties, the semi-final of the youth Euro 2007 England – the Netherlands remains a record for UEFA tournaments – 32 hits for two teams and the victory of Orange 13:12.

In the 1996/1997 season, in the preliminary round match of the French Cup, Obernai and Wittelsheim hit 40 penalties, converting 30 of them – 15 penalties for each team. Since there was no artificial lighting in the arena, and the determination of the strongest was delayed until late in the evening, the judge decided to stop the series due to darkness. Obernai advanced to the next round in the rankings.

And the game of the first round of the Namibian Cup Palace – Siviks remains the record in history for the number of post-match 11-meter kicks, in which the teams scored 48 penalties for two, and Palace celebrated the victory with a score of 17:16.
