Football’s most powerful woman leaves: Russia’s Marina Granovskaia is no longer at Chelsea

The right-hand man of Roman Abramovich, manager of the London club, who had a lot of influence in the management of contracts and signings, is parted from the Blues after a change of ownership, after the sale of the Russian magnate to the Todd Boehly consortium. .

Little by little, Chelsea is breaking away from the remnants of the era of Roman Abramovich. This Wednesday, the English club formalized what was an open secret: the departure of Marina Granovskaya who was the Russian businessman’s right-hand man during his stay in London, has become considered the most powerful woman in world football.

“We thank Marina for her many years of excellent service to the club and wish her the best in her future endeavours,” said Todd Boehly, the institution’s new owner and co-controller, appointed chairman of the board. and, in addition, the interim sports director until a replacement takes office, who can assume this function full-time.

Granovskaia was the right-hand man of Roman Abramovich, the Russian tycoon who had to get rid of the London club’s ownership following the war in Ukraine, due to the millionaire’s closeness to Vladimir Putin and British government sanctions. He is a reserved person, who has no social networks and who is not assiduous in giving interviews.

He was born in Russia and has dual nationality: Russian and Canadian. He studied at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Moscow State University and graduated in 1997. In the same year, he began his career at the oil company Sibneft, which belonged to Abramovich. It was the start of the bond between the two, one that stretched into football when the tycoon acquired Chelsea in 2003. For more than 20 years she was a collaborator of the millionaire, being his main adviser in various fields.

In 2003 she moved from Moscow to London and since 2010 has acted as the owner’s representative at the club and in support of the board, which she joined in June 2012. In her role as director, her main task was the transfers and Chelsea’s contractual agreements. She called herself the “Iron Lady”, considering that everything that happened at Stamford Bridge had to have her approval.

In addition to the many signings the club made under his leadership (Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, the return of José Mourinho, among others), Another triumph attributed to him is the contract between Chelsea and Nike, in 2017, breaking all Premier League records: 60 million pounds per year for 15 years, until 2032. In 2021, Marina Granovskaia won the award for “best director” from a European club at the Golden Boys.
