The main cities are Kyiv, Lviv and Uzhgorod
Executive Director of the Ukrainian Premier League Eugene Wild spoke about the format of the Ukrainian championship in the 2022/23 season, and also named Ternopil and Rivne among the cities that can host matches of the national championship.
“On June 9, we held a working group, in which all clubs participating in the 2022/23 season took part. Several options were considered. Among other things, the clubs were asked to consider the option of splitting into eights. But the working group did not support this option,” Dyky said.
“At the moment, the option with 16 clubs is supported. Again, this is a working group, not a final decision. The format is the classical system. But the territorial principle must be taken into account – during the draw of the calendar, the clubs were divided according to the location of the team at the time of the match in order to reduce the logistical burden.
“We are still waiting for the decision of the relevant state structures regarding the requirements for holding matches. Now two options are being considered: Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as the west of Ukraine – Lviv, Uzhgorod. In addition, in theory, we can consider the stadium in Ternopil. There is also information that Veres is finishing accepting the commissioning of his stadium. Perhaps by the start of the season, which should start on August 20, Veres will put the stadium into operation and will play home matches at his stadium.”
Earlier it was reported that the final vote for the format of the new championship should take place in early July.
Last football season in Ukraine ended ahead of schedule due to a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukrainian territories.
