Piquerez projects a sequence of games between Palmeiras and São Paulo

Joaquim Piquerez, left-back for Palmeiras, commented on the sequence of classics that Verdão will have against São Paulo in the coming days

This Monday, the 20th, the palm trees visit the Sao Paulo in a match valid for the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship. Without much time to celebrate the victory or regret the defeat, the teams will face each other again this Thursday, 23, in the first game of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, also at Morumbi Stadium.

In an exclusive interview with “GE”, Piquerez commented on the games against one of Verdão’s biggest rivals. Despite the difficulty that a classic presents, the left-back seems to be very aware of what he has to do in these two games. Palmeiras is currently leader of the competition and wants to remain at the top of the table.

During the season, the team led by Abel Ferreira only lost three games. First, against the Chelsea in the Club World Cup final, then against São Paulo, in the first leg of the Paulistão final, and then against Ceará at the Brasileirão premiere. Even being defeated by Tricolor paulista, Palmeiras reversed the result and became state champion.

For us it doesn’t change the way we play. Palmeiras will always play to win. There’s this ‘plus’ for being a classic (in the Copa do Brasil), we’ve already won their Paulistão final. It will be a 180 minute game. Gotta be focused to make it happen“, commented the left-back remembering the title over his rival.

In addition, the Uruguayan also spoke about the moment of Palmeiras. Without losing in 18 games, including the commitments of the three competitions it disputes, the Alviverde team is going through a great moment, but for the side, it is not synonymous with victory. Asking the team to focus, Piquerez defined the Brasileirão as a campaign of resistance and not speed.

It’s knowing the moment we’re living, which is good, but remembering that last year we weren’t doing very well in the Brazilian before the Libertadores final. We have to know that now that we’re good we’re not the best, and we weren’t the worst when we were bad. We have to stay focused, do the work the coach asks for. The Brazilian is a campaign of resistance and not of speed. We need to stay focused“, said.
