Manuel Pellegrini lands Betis aspirations hours after debut: ‘There are players missing if you want a competitive team’

The Engineer side will be without Claudio Bravo on their debut against Ben Brereton’s Villarreal. This Saturday, a day after the crash, DT put a cold rag on fan expectations.

The Chilean clash between Ben Brereton and Claudio Bravo this Sunday was one of the attractions of the first day of La Liga. However, the aspirations of those who wanted to see the two national footballers face each other this week since the national goalkeeper has not participated in four training sessions in Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

According to what was revealed in Spain, the goalkeeper presented an illness that would prevent him from being part of his team’s debut. This Saturday, the DT had opened the door to its inclusion, by not excluding it completely from the payroll. “Later we will have the clear medical part for this match, we have to take a good look at Claudio’s situation,” said the strategist. Eventually, The goalkeeper was not on the list.

In this line, the former Manchester City coach points to a problem that became common in Spain just before the start of the first division: registrations. “I can’t give the list now, to see if some of the damage is resolved. We will try to register as many players as possible. I don’t know the names that could be there tomorrow,” admitted the man from Santiago.

The coach also took the opportunity to meet the expectations that are placed on his casting. He knows the biggest prize goes to the Champions League, but he doesn’t get mad about it. “It’s always been the ambition since we’ve been here to surpass what was done the previous season. We managed to qualify for Europe three seasons in a row, which had never been done before, more the title of the Copa del Rey,” he pointed out.

“There is also a reality that must be understood. Aspirations also go to the economic side. There are six or seven clubs which are superior in economic capacity and which bring reinforcements. We will see on August 31 with the group we met and what aspirations. We would like to go further in the Europa League, go to the Champions League, but we must not distort reality with illusion or ambition,” he adds.

Moreover, he said his team should still include other athletes. “There are players missing if we want a competitive team, because important footballers have left and there are positions that are not filled, especially in creation. We haven’t replaced Sergio Canales or Joaquín, Isco is a complement that covers Fekir’s injury, but we are missing two very creative players”, he underlined.
