Citizens beat Sevilla on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup match
Head coach Manchester City Pep Guardiola spoke about the victory over Sevilla in UEFA Super Cup in the penalty shootout.
“Ederson saved us a couple of times. Last week against Arsenal we lost on penalties but this time we won. It wasn’t easy for Cole Palmer in this final, but he did an excellent job.”
“The end of En Nesiri may not have been perfect, but there were also worse moments when Ocampos was close too. But Ederson saved us. After the first minutes of the second half, we found our pass, controlled the game more. Towards the end we scored and in the last minutes we felt that we were the ones who could score. If Sevilla had scored the second goal, it might have been impossible for us to come back.”
“Sevilla have outstanding players, a great goalkeeper, international players at full back. Oliver Torres has the quality to get along with strikers, they are dangerous in attack.”
“Before, I sometimes had a feeling of lack of motivation when the team won a lot of trophies. But today I didn’t have that feeling. We are very happy that we won the trophy. Previously, we missed another one that could have allowed us to complete the full cycle, but now we are waiting for the next opportunity.”
Manchester City have won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in their history. The main time ended in a draw. The fate of the match and the trophy was decided in a penalty shootout – 5:4 in favor of Manchester City. The only miss was made by Nemanja Gudel – the ball hit the crossbar after the Serb hit.
Manchester City beat Burnley in the first round of the Premier League. Guardiola’s next match will be against Newcastle on 19 August.
