Sandra Zanevskaya: Kostyuk is one of the most promising tennis players on the Tour

The new coach of the Ukrainian woman believes that Marta is capable of winning more than one Grand Slam tournament in the future

New Ukrainian coach Marty Kostyukformer Polish tennis player Sandra Zanevskayaspoke about the qualities and prospects of her ward.

“In my opinion, given that Marta is only 21 years old, she is one of the most promising girls on the Tour. I do not see anything impossible for her, on the contrary – I see in Marta a tennis player who will win a Grand Slam tournament or even several in the future. I have no doubt about that.”

“During Wimbledon, Martha’s manager approached me and asked if I would like to work with her. I thought about it for literally three seconds. Martha’s manager knows that she has a lot of talent and she can achieve a lot, I think much more than she has achieved so far. I must say that this offer came as a complete surprise to me, because usually such changes do not occur in the middle of the season.

“Today, Martha is very young and at the same time, she already has a lot of experience behind her. She is able to look at some things differently. She went through a lot, but on the other hand, it was not easy for her when, at such a young age, the media and fans began to show interest. Although it is still better to get into the third round of the Australian Open at 15 than at 20. So far, her career has been very successful. Of course, it depends on what point of view you look at it from. You can compare her to most players, or you can compare her to Coco Gauff, who has already reached great heights at a much younger age.

“Martha has a full range of skills. She is good physically, she can play aggressively, defend, go to the net, serve. You need to put it all together, which can take some time. This is the biggest problem, because sometimes all these elements are mixed up, which is quite normal, since with so many possibilities, you can make ten different decisions in each draw. And on the court, you often have to make those decisions at a very fast pace. We need to make Martha more stable by making the right decisions on the court. This will result in fewer unforced errors and situations during matches where points are lost very quickly. This often happened to her, when she could play some great games, and then give a series of much weaker ones.

“We will also continue to work on her serving and receiving because those are the most important elements. We want to focus on getting her to finish as many plays as possible near the net. She is good at it and likes to play aggressively. Also, if you look at which players win majors, you can see that these are not the girls who run five meters behind the back of the court, hoping not to make a mistake.

The fact that the Polish specialist will train the Ukrainian tennis player became known in early August.

This week, Kostyuk was eliminated from the first round of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati, USA, in both singles and doubles.

Marta, along with Elina Svitolina, Angelina Kalinina, Lesya Tsurenko and Katerina Beindl, made it to the US Open 2023 main draw list, which will be held from August 28 to September 10.
