President of the International Football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino called FIFA’s decision to increase the number of participants in the Women’s World Cup from 24 to 32 teams a success.
The final match of the tournament, which takes place in Australia and New Zealand, will take place on August 20. Teams from England and Spain will compete for the trophy. Follow the live broadcast of the match from 12:50 p.m. on the channel.
– FIFA has invested one billion dollars in the development of football around the world, with a particular focus on women’s football. We did it despite the coronavirus which affected us all. Women’s football was alive even in the most difficult times. And we decided to increase the number of teams in the World Cup to 32.
I remember when we decided to do this, the critics said that it would not work, that the level of the national teams was too different. They kept saying it would be 15-0 and it would have a bad effect on women’s football.
As often in recent years, FIFA was once again right. We had eight starting teams in the tournament, many countries around the world suddenly realized that they had a chance to participate in the World Cup, – BBC quotes Infantino.
