Seven Corinthians fans died in a bus accident on Fernão Dias; vehicle was returning to São Paulo after a game against Cruzeiro, for the Brasileirão

A bus with supporters Corinthians overturned early this Sunday, the 20th, on the Fernão Dias Highway, at KM 520, in Igarapé in Greater BH. The vehicle was returning from Minas Gerais to São Paulo. The club from São Paulo faced the cruise last Saturday night, for the Brazilian Championship.

According to preliminary information from the Fire Department, seven of the 43 people in the vehicle died at the scene. Ten people were trapped in the wreckage. Witnesses reported that the driver shouted that the vehicle had no brakes, according to “G1”.

The bus was returning to São Paulo and had left the capital of Minas Gerais shortly after the game at Mineirão. The vehicle was hired by a sub-headquarters of Gaviões da Fiel do Vale do Paraíba and took fans from São José dos Campos, Jacareí, Caçapava, Taubaté and Pindamonhangaba.

According to Arteris Fernão Dias, the concessionaire that manages the section of the highway, the driver lost control of the vehicle when he entered the curve, crashed into an embankment and overturned. The track in the direction of São Paulo was closed at 6:51 am (Brasília time), and recorded 4km of congestion.

The club used social media to issue a statement lamenting the tragedy: “Sport Club Corinthians Paulista expresses its regret for the fatal victims of the accident that occurred early this Sunday (20), on the Fernão Dias highway, involving the bus carrying fans who were in Belo Horizonte to support the team during the match against Cruzeiro, in the last night”.
