At the congress International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in Manila, Philippines, a new president of the organization was elected. They became the Qatari sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani.
The new FIBA President will remain in office until 2027. His predecessor, Malian Hamane Nyang (elected in 2019), officially resigned.
Al Thani was voted unanimously by all representatives of national federations present at the meeting of the Congress of the organization.
Representatives of the continents in this post alternate: an Asian replaced an African, the next president for the term 2027-2031 will be a representative of Oceania, then leaders from Europe (2031-2035) and America (2035-2039) are expected.
Al Thani previously served as FIBA Vice President and FIBA Asia President. He was Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
Together with the new leader, the organization decided on the composition of the new Central Council, which included representatives of 13 countries.
