Andrés Rueda, president of Santos, did not mince words to describe the complicated phase experienced at Alvinegro Praiano; manager takes scolding for the season
The president of saints, Andres Rueda, opened the game on the current circumstances of the club. Alvinegro Praiano is fighting to leave the relegation zone and avoid its first drop to the Serie B throughout the history of Brazilian football, in addition to dealing with financial and market issues. In an interview with Estadão, the manager admitted all the errors collected throughout the season.
“The year of saints it’s dark, it’s horrible even here. I cannot argue with what the results show.”spiked Rueda. “It wasn’t even close to what we thought, but the choices were always made with a view to getting it right. There are things we did that fans don’t know, that structured the club for the future. But 2023 is horrible. We know we have to race against time to get Santos out of this situation. From now until the end of the year, it’s time to reset everything and try to recover what we can”.
The São Paulo team went through the hands of several coaches throughout the year, such as Odair Hellmann, Paulo Turra and now, Diego Aguirre. Even so, the team’s performance remains worrying in the Brasileirão, the only competition in which the club managed to remain. Peixe was eliminated in the group stage of the South American and in the round of 16 of Brazil’s Cup. At the beginning of the year, Santos also struggled not to fall into Paulistanand he didn’t even go to the knockout stage.
“I am responsible for what happened. There’s no way to fight with the result, or lack thereof. All the people who passed through Santos this year are very good professionally, I have no reason to point the finger or complain about any of them. But when you don’t have results in football, you have to change.”explained Rueda.
“We changed the command of the team, we brought in new players to qualify the squad and replace the departures we had and now it is time to do everything possible to restore Santos to the level it deserves”. In addition, the president of Alvinegro highlighted that the fans are right to demand improvements and criticize the management.
They are right to criticize me because Santos has not been performing what is expected of him. Cheering is what moves the club and I thank them for being together to help the team in this difficult time. We need everyone together, players, coaching staff, board and fans, so that Santos can leave this moment behind”.
