Ukraine – England. The British last lost in Poland 50 years ago, blue and yellow in 2020

The match in Wroclaw will be the first for the Ukrainian team in this city, although our national team will play the ninth match in Poland

On September 9, the national teams of Ukraine and England will meet in Wroclaw in the match of the fifth round of the group round of Euro 2024 qualification. For the blue-yellows, the match at Tarczynski Arena will be the ninth match in Poland, for the Three Lions the 11th. Both teams have one defeat in this country, but if England last lost in Poland back in 1973, then Ukraine – relatively recently – in November 2020. On the eve of the Euro 2024 qualifying match Ukraine – England, we tell how the blue-yellows and the Three Lions used to play in Poland.

England and Ukraine have one defeat each in Poland

The England team played 10 matches in Poland. Three matches won, six ended in a draw, one match lost. It is noteworthy that this only defeat happened 50 years ago – in June 1973, as part of the selection for the 1974 World Cup. Then Poland beat the English – 2:0. England won their last win in Poland 19 years ago in September 2004, beating Kadra 2-1 in Warsaw thanks to a Defoe ball and a Glowacki own goal.

Ukraine played eight matches in Poland. She has three wins, one loss and four draws. The blue-yellows suffered the only defeat in Poland in November 2020, losing in a friendly match to the national team of this country. The last victory was won a little over a year ago: in June 2022, by defeating Armenia in the League of Nations match (3:0).

England is the fifth opponent for Ukraine in Poland

Interestingly, out of eight matches in Poland, the blue-yellows played only half against the national team of the country – a victory, a defeat and two draws. Four matches were in Kosovo, Armenia, Ireland and Scotland.

Ukrainians played with the national team of Kosovo in Krakow in October 2016 due to the non-recognition of the independence of the Balkan country by Ukraine. Further – due to the large-scale military invasion of Russia – in Poland, the blue-yellows played home matches of the League of Nations against Armenia, Ireland and Scotland. The result of these fights is two wins (over Kosovo and Armenia), two draws (against Ireland and Scotland).

Wroclaw is the fifth Polish city for the Ukrainian team

Wroclaw will host the national match of Ukraine for the first time. Prior to that, the blue-yellows played their fights in Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow and Chorzow.

The statistics by city are as follows: Warsaw – one win, Chorzow – a win and a loss, Lodz – a win and two draws, Krakow – a win and a draw.
