Manchester United could drop into the relegation places under Michael Carrick if they lose to Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United face relegation threat under Carrick

Manchester United face the prospect of dropping into the relegation places if they suffer another defeat against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 16:30, with Michael Carrick's side teetering near the foot of the Premier League table after an alarming collapse in domestic form.

A negative result against Villa would leave United inside the relegation zone, facing the prospect of demotion to the Championship, the second tier of English football.

Captained by Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes, the team have endured a disastrous start to the season. Across their opening nine league fixtures, United have managed just a single victory, alongside four draws and four defeats.

Cup competitions have offered little respite. United have already been eliminated from the League Cup by Brighton, while their Champions League campaign stands at two wins and two defeats.

Dressing room tension and Carrick under pressure

The dismal sequence of results has placed Carrick under intense scrutiny. His position is increasingly delicate due to the lack of victories and emerging signs of serious unrest within the Old Trafford dressing room.

The crisis has prompted comparisons to the famous curse of Béla Guttmann at Portuguese giants Benfica, who have not won a European trophy since 1962. At Manchester United, the enduring problem remains the absence of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The shadow of Alex Ferguson and fourteen barren years

United have not won the English league championship in 14 seasons since Ferguson retired in June 2013. The Scottish manager oversaw an era of unprecedented success, lifting 13 Premier League titles during more than 26 years in charge.

A succession of high-profile managers have attempted to revive the club, including Portuguese tacticians José Mourinho and Ruben Amorim. Yet United have repeatedly stumbled whenever they have placed their faith in former players who once played under Ferguson.

Carrick was appointed manager following the dismissal of Amorim. That hiring echoed the appointment of former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was brought in to replace Mourinho, with both former Ferguson players struggling to turn the club around.

Mourinho remains the only manager since Ferguson's retirement to deliver European silverware to Old Trafford, having guided United to victory in the Europa League in 2017.

Roma comeback and European trip to Lisbon

United secured temporary relief on Tuesday night during a dramatic Champions League tie at Old Trafford. The Red Devils fought back from 2-0 down against Italian side Roma to claim a 3-2 victory.

That European comeback brought an end to a nine-match winless streak across all competitions, easing some immediate pressure on the coaching staff.

United must quickly regroup after Sunday's encounter with Aston Villa. The squad travels to Lisbon on November 25 to face Sporting CP at the Estádio José Alvalade, facing another high-stakes European test under intense scrutiny.
