The Champions League League Phase hits the halfway mark with 18 matches as AEK Athens face Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain visit Villarreal.

Champions League: AEK host Real Madrid at halfway stage

AEK Athens host 15-time winners Real Madrid on Wednesday as the Champions League reaches its League Phase halfway mark with 18 fixtures over two days.

The matches on Tuesday, 3 November, and Wednesday, 4 November, mark the fourth round of the tournament's 72nd season as Europe's premier club competition, and its 35th since being rebranded as the Champions League. Five clubs enter the week defending perfect records with three wins from three games.

AEK Athens and Real Madrid history

Greek interest focuses on Athens, where AEK, known as Enosis, prepare for one of the greatest challenges of their European campaign. The Greek club welcome Real Madrid, the record 15-time European champions, on Wednesday at 19:45 in a fixture carrying rich historical significance.

The two sides have met four times in European competitions, sharing an evenly balanced record of one victory each and two draws. Their first encounters came in the 1985-86 UEFA Cup, where Real Madrid advanced 5-1 on aggregate after winning 5-0 in Spain following a 1-0 defeat in Athens.

They met again in the 2002-03 Champions League group stage, producing two high-scoring draws. The teams played out a 3-3 thriller in Athens before drawing 2-2 in Madrid.

AEK have never lost at home to Real Madrid, recording one win and one draw. The Greek side also remain unbeaten in both of their home fixtures in the Champions League main phase against Spanish opponents, having followed the 3-3 draw against Real Madrid with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna in September 2003.

Real Madrid carry an uneasy record when traveling to Greece. In eight away European matches against Greek clubs, the Spanish giants have claimed just one victory, alongside five draws and two defeats. Their solitary away triumph in Greece arrived last season, when they defeated Olympiacos 4-3 during the League Phase.

Paris Saint-Germain visit to Villarreal

Paris Saint-Germain have made a flawless start to the League Phase and aim to preserve their 100 percent winning record. The French champions sit on nine points from three games, having scored 14 goals.

Their recent European performances were highlighted by consecutive 4-2 victories against both Manchester City and Barcelona. On Tuesday, PSG travel to Spain to face Villarreal, who have scored eight goals in their opening three games but have shown clear defensive frailties, most notably in a 4-3 loss to Liverpool.

The French side will be without forward Ousmane Dembele because of a thigh injury. PSG nonetheless retain formidable attacking sharpness, shown in a recent 5-1 domestic victory over Le Havre in which Achraf Hakimi scored a hat-trick.

Aston Villa, Barcelona and Real Betis form

Paris Saint-Germain are not the only club with maximum points. Aston Villa are among the five teams holding nine points and host Barcelona on Tuesday.

Barcelona travel to England after a comprehensive 6-1 domestic victory over Alaves. However, the Catalan club have suffered defeats in their previous two major European tests, falling 2-1 to Real Madrid and losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Betis are also in outstanding form, sitting fourth in La Liga with nine points in European competition following victories over Lille, Porto and Feyenoord. Betis now travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund, who have collected six points.

Liverpool look to rebound after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League. The Merseyside club travel to Turkey to play Fenerbahce, targeting a fourth consecutive European win, though Fenerbahce have already earned home draws against Roma and Slavia Prague.

Arsenal travel to the Czech Republic to face Slavia Prague, with morale high after their 1-0 win over Liverpool restored them to the top of the Premier League table.

Bayern Munich injuries before Atletico Madrid

Bayern Munich face a demanding assignment against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. The German champions opened the League Phase with an emphatic 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt but have since been held to two draws, including a 3-3 result against Norwegian side Viking.

They encounter an Atletico Madrid team in commanding form. The Spanish side have recorded seven consecutive victories in La Liga, climbing to second in the Spanish top flight.

Harry Kane is expected to lead the Bayern attack, but the visitors must manage severe injury absences. Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry suffered injuries during a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund and are ruled out, while Jamal Musiala and Luis Diaz continue their rehabilitation.

Bayern received positive news on Monday when Michael Olise resumed full training. The French winger had been recovering from a knee problem sustained during Der Klassiker.

Manchester United struggles and French club form

Manchester United find themselves in a troubled spell both domestically and in Europe. United sit 17th in the Premier League and have lost two consecutive Champions League matches as they prepare to host Roma at Old Trafford.

A fresh 2-0 defeat to Chelsea has intensified pressure on manager Michael Carrick, leaving a somber atmosphere around the club. Carrick's side are in urgent need of a positive response on Tuesday night.

French representatives Lille and Lens are also desperate for points to maintain hopes of reaching the knockout play-offs. Lille have yet to collect a single point in the competition following a 3-0 loss to Arsenal, and now face a daunting journey north of the Arctic Circle to play Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.

Lens enter Wednesday's home match against Italian club Como after two straight defeats. The French club lost 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon before suffering a heavy 3-0 loss against Club Brugge.

Greek player representation in the Champions League

The Greek presence across this season's Champions League is extensive, with 20 Greek footballers involved in the League Phase.

On Tuesday, defender Konstantinos Koulierakis travels with Roma to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. Sporting Lisbon, who feature Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Vagiannidis, play Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk in London.

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund host Real Betis with Konstantinos Karetsas in their ranks, though injured teammate Giannis Konstantelias remains unavailable. Kostas Tsimikas and Liverpool visit Fenerbahce, Tasos Douvikas travels with Como to Lens, and Christos Tzolis lines up for Arsenal away to Slavia Prague.

Along with those eight players, AEK Athens boast 12 Greek footballers in their squad, bringing the overall total to 20 across the 36-team competition.
