After making a position at Botafogo available, coach Bruno Lage spoke for the first time about his intention with a statement: “I want the pressure on me”
The coach Bruno Lageof Botafogospoke for the first time since the controversial statement following the defeat to Flamengo, on the 2nd, for the Brazilian Championship. In a post-classic press conference, Glorioso’s coach even made the position available.
In an interview with “GE”, Lage revealed that the intention was to protect the Rio club’s players after a setback in a classic. For him, the statement worked, as the pressure and repercussion of the result went to the coach.
“The conclusion I come to is that it worked, because the pressure came on me. It worked in such a way that there was more talk about the situation, thankfully, than about the game’s VAR. I am with my heart and soul in Botafogo. There has to be a normal anxiety, both on their part (players) and on the part of the fans, about something that is still a long way away, but that can be achieved and that has been elusive for 28 years (Brazilian title)”, told journalists Bernardo Serrado, Edson Viana and Sergio Santana.
“What I did very clearly is ‘this will always be me, making the best decisions for Botafogo’. I want maximum pressure. But what I feel is that there can’t be extra anxiety just because you’re doing something new. Because the new thing also works. Two of our wingers came off the bench and we managed to turn things around”, completed.
Bruno Lage highlighted that he does not regret making the controversial statement. Botafogo leads the Brazilian Championship comfortably: Glorioso has 51 points and ten more than the vice-leader Palm trees.
“In this life we don’t have time for regret. I know what I did, I know the feeling it generated around me. What is most important is for people to understand that the coach is here. I made the position available, but I never wanted to leave. I wanted people to feel comfortable understanding whether this extra anxiety that arises as a result of any change to improve the team is causing greater anxiety for the players,” observed before talking about the athletes’ reaction.
“Reaction of astonishment… Each person is free to make the interpretations they want. Sometimes I joke that when we’re preparing a strategy for a game, I won’t know what a coach is going to do when there’s a player injured or suspended. I have to try to get into his head and see how he will try to climb the team. The only interpretation is this”, completed.
