The midfielder received messages from the military after the match with England
Midfielder Shakhtar Taras Stepanenko said that the performance of the Miners in European cups and the Ukrainian national team in international matches is monitored by the military, who are fighting for the independence of Ukraine at the front.
“Our soldiers fight in the war, and we fight in the sports arena. This is our duty as citizens of Ukraine.”
“When we drew 1-1 with England, I actually received a lot of messages from the fighters. They watched the game on the battlefield near the area where the situation is now the most difficult when they received such an opportunity. For them it’s like a break from their surroundings.”
“It’s difficult to compare us and the guys at the front. We are in good conditions, playing football. And these guys support us while at war.”
Shakhtar will play Porto in the first round of the Champions League. The match will take place in Hamburg on September 19. The match will be judged by the Italian team of referees led by Davide Massa.
About 46 thousand fans out of 51 thousand available seats will watch the match at the Volksparkstadion. The meeting starts at 22:00 Kyiv time.
