Van Leeuwen: If we hadn’t made mistakes, I think we would have stayed in the game longer

The Pitmen started the Champions League group stage with a defeat

Head coach Shakhtar Patrick van Leeuwen commented on his team’s first game in the group stage of the Champions League. The miners lost to Porto at the start of the European Cup – 1:3.

“In recent weeks we have had to make decisions regarding the players involved in the national teams and those who took part in each championship game. We try to form a team that can give their best effort during all matches during the week. That’s why some players started in many matches, but not now.”

“Sikan started the match well using his speed. In the case of the second goal, he made the mistake of thinking that he could clear the ball and change flanks, but it was the wrong decision that led to the goal being conceded. I also think there was no need to change him at half-time – we should have given him a chance to improve to see if we could take advantage of his speed again.”

“Hamburg? The stadium was full, so I think coming here was a good decision for Shakhtar. Many people here show interest in international games. I am pleased with the venue of the match and the fact that the fans came. In my opinion, yes, Hamburg is a great choice.”

“I think there is a difference in quality and experience, but there is always an opportunity. I don’t think if we hadn’t made mistakes we wouldn’t have conceded, but I think we would have stayed in the game more. My players could feel more confident in this case. We conceded the first goal, reacted well and equalized, but still conceded the second too quickly. We didn’t even have time to enjoy the result of good work to return to the game. It was a shame. Yes, there is a difference in quality.

“I think Stav Lemkin pulled a muscle. We are waiting for the results from the doctors, everything will be known tomorrow. This usually takes 24 hours. The players will return soon enough, but Valery Bondar will need more time.”

The Portuguese scored goals from Taremi and Galen, who scored a double. The Miners’ only goal was scored by Kevin Kelsey.

In the second round of Group H, Shakhtar will play Antwerp away. The reporting match will take place on October 4.
