Former Manchester United player Andrei Kanchelskis expressed hope that Russian football players will soon be allowed to participate in international competitions.
On Tuesday, it became known that the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) asked the organization’s leaders to propose a technical solution that would allow the Russian U-17 teams (girls and boys) to be reinstated. All matches of Russian teams must take place without the country’s flag, anthem and national uniform and outside Russian territory.
— Is there a chance we will go, or will UEFA follow the example of those who refuse?
— Everything will depend on FIFA and UEFA. I repeat, politics and sport are incompatible. For some reason they took all of that and combined it. And now people are suffering, athletes are suffering, everyone is suffering. We will wait and hope for a positive response.
— In Minsk, our children under 14 will participate in the UEFA Development Tournament. Can this be considered as some kind of intermediate and positive result?
– Certainly. Any competition under the auspices of FIFA and UEFA is a huge advantage for athletes. We athletes have short lives and it’s terrible to be deprived of such pleasures. God willing, everything will be resolved for the best. But we are hostages of the situation we find ourselves in,” Metaratings.ru quotes Kanchelskis as saying.
Russian clubs and national teams are no longer allowed to participate in tournaments under the auspices of UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA) from February 2022.
