“Our priority is to play in official UEFA competitions” – RFU General Secretary

general secretary Russian Football Union (RFS) Maxim Mitrofanov spoke about the situation with permission Russian U-17 national team at international tournaments and noted that the performances of Russian teams and clubs in official competitions UEFA is a priority for the RFU.

On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee asked the union’s leaders to propose a solution that would allow the Russian U-17 and under national teams (girls and boys) to be reinstated. According to media reports, on October 10, UEFA abandoned the idea of sending Russian youth teams back to tournaments because it was impossible to find “a technical solution to allow Russian teams to be admitted.” The ban on the participation of Russian national teams of all ages in international tournaments has been in effect since February 2022.

— How would you assess the situation regarding the admission of the Russian U-17 national team to international matches?

— In this regard, there is an instruction from the UEFA Executive Committee to technically study this possibility – with which countries, in which basket, within what time frame.

— When can we make a decision?

— Such an instruction has been given and is currently being carried out by the UEFA Administration. Some journalists began to announce that something in this regard had been canceled. But this is not true.

— But the boycotts of a number of countries influenced the situation in one way or another. Did you expect them?

“We expected some sort of resonance, but the situation is not a surprise.”

— Does the overall situation influence the decision on a possible transition to the Asian Confederation?

— What influence should it have if UEFA decides to develop a scenario aimed at involving at least one team in its competitions? If a positive step is taken, how might it be perceived? Only positive.

— So the RFU’s priority is UEFA?

— We are members of UEFA. And our priority is to play in official UEFA competitions. Both the national team and the clubs. UEFA is the strongest confederation in the world. Surely you want a better outcome for your child? The RFU therefore wants the same thing for Russian football. And he tries to do everything so that even in current conditions there are positive moments.

— In a boycott situation, could UEFA take a tougher stance towards countries that do not want to play with the Russian U-17 team?

“You don’t know what position she has taken or will take.” By the way, UEFA’s decisions regarding the Russian U-17 national team would be meaningless without FIFA’s decisions. This is also an important step, the result of the work of the RFU. Moreover, the work is not easy,” Mitrofanov was quoted as saying by the correspondent.

On Monday, Turkey will host a friendly match between Russia and Kenya, starting at 7:00 p.m. (Moscow time). Watch the live broadcast from 18:40 (Moscow time) on the channel, matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru sites.
