Head coach of Malta: Ukraine is fighting for second place in the group, our match will affect the standings

Michele Marcolini expects changes to the blue-yellow tactical scheme

Head coach Malta national team Michele Marcolini noted that the match with Ukraine will have important tournament significance in Group C of qualification European Championship 2024.

“With the exception of the last match, against North Macedonia, the Ukrainian team used the same scheme. This indicates that the opponent has a clearly defined style of play that our team will have to fight against.

Now the situation is different than before the previous meeting. Then Ukraine just got a new coach, who didn’t have much time to implement his opinions.”

“I expect another game. We need to adapt to the new Ukrainian national team. We understand that the opponent is fighting with Italy for second place in the group. This gives our meeting importance, since its result will have a direct impact on the standings.”

The Malta-Ukraine match will take place on October 17. The meeting starts at 21:45. The fight will be judged by the Danish team led by referee Morten Krogh.

The blue-and-yellows met Malta in June in a “home” qualifying match for Euro 2024 in Trnava, Slovakia. Sergei Rebrov’s team won minimally, thanks to Viktor Tsygankov’s goal from the penalty spot.

The Ukrainian national team takes third place in Group C of qualification for Euro 2024. Rebrov’s team has 10 points. Italy has the same number, having played one match less. England leads Group C with 13 points.
