Melgosa: It’s great that we snatched victory at the last minute, we had fun

The mentor is satisfied with the team’s growth process

Head coach Ukrainian national team U-21 Unai Melgosa commented on the victory over England (3:2) in the selection for European Youth Championship 2025.

“It’s great that we won, but what’s also cool is how we won, scoring in the last minute. Therefore, this pleasure that we received is part of the process. That is, now we are happy, but tomorrow we will think about the next fights.”

“It’s very difficult to maintain the level of energy that we had throughout the match. Still, we played against the champions of the last Euro, and in those moments in the second half we felt the strength of our opponents. But I saw that our team fought, tried to do something again and managed to do it.”

“Goal in the last minutes – in this sport these things happen. It doesn’t mean it will always be like this – we will win, we will win in the last minutes – we just need to try to play further and further. But it’s also true that if you don’t implement your tactics perfectly on the field, and if you don’t give it your all with all your heart, then moments like this will simply not be possible.”

“Kvasnitsa? We trust him a lot, he’s a guy who works well in training. He does not get a place in the starting line because everyone has to fight for him and every player has to prove his place, every player is in fair competition and can get into the starting line-up. That’s why Ilya will fight for this position.”

“A shot and a free kick? Usually we have all plans for absolutely all standards. He has a great shot, he shot and made the right choice.”

“Are you satisfied with the result? First of all, I’m happy with the process. I’m happy with what’s happening and how the team is growing. I watch how the players train, how they come to the national team, and how they fight for their national team. They are progressing, listening to us. We don’t have much time to train on the field, but they follow tactical analyzes in great detail and work with videos. Therefore, this is just one moment in a very long history, on the path of this youth team to results. They work great.”

The blue-and-yellows were winning 2-0 after the first half, but lost their lead in the second half. The victory for Unai Melgosa’s team was brought by a goal from Ilya Kvasnitsa in injury time.

The Ukrainian U-21 team scored nine points after three matches and single-handedly topped Group F. The English are in second place with six points. In the next match, Melgosa’s team will meet Luxembourg on November 17.
