(ANSA) – ROME, OCTOBER 16 – “In my opinion, 90% of football players bet, and this does not surprise me at all, I have spoken to many of them. They have a lot of free time, they love adrenaline, they have a competitive spirit, and they have a lot of money. And this makes them very prone to gambling, which is a huge problem. We are not talking about match-fixing, but about betting.” Francesco Baranca, secretary general of Federbet (an international organization that fights illegal betting in sports), speaks into the microphones of the Spanish Cadena Ser about a problem that has again become relevant not only in Italy (see the Paqueta case in England). “The profile of a football player is most similar to the profile of a gambling addict,” says Baranča, “and now there is a need to talk about it openly and change your mentality.
