Bonucci probably knew about Fagioli’s gambling addiction

Experienced defender may also face disqualification

According to several media reports, the current defender of the Berlin UnionEuropean champion 2021 Leonardo Bonucci knew about his ex-partner’s addiction to betting Juventusmidfielder Nicolo Fagioli.

According to the latest information, Fagioli, who cooperated with the investigation, provided the federal prosecutor’s office with his telephone contacts. Some information was leaked to the press and it became known that several months before the scandal became public, at least two Juventus partners, including Leonardo Bonucci, were aware of Nicolo’s penchant for gambling.

However, there is no reliable information that the defender, who moved from Turin to Union in the summer of 2023, made bets himself. However, for sanctions against him, the very fact of failure to report a betting game performed by Fagioli will be sufficient – a six-month disqualification is standard for such an offense.

Let us remind you that a new bookmaking scandal has broken out in Italian football. Fagioli was under investigation for involvement in gambling through illegal online platforms. Italian police have identified a number of players who are suspected of participating in illegal betting. Earlier, Newcastle and Italy national team midfielder Sandro Tonali admitted his involvement in illegal gambling, the player intends to undergo psychotherapy.

The Italian Olympic Committee’s Code of Sports Justice prohibits professional football players from directly or indirectly betting on events held under the auspices of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), UEFA and FIFA.

In addition, football players are required to inform federal prosecutors if they become aware of a player who is gambling illegally or intends to do so.

22-year-old Fagioli is a graduate of the Juventus primavera, who made his way to the base of the Turin club in the fall of 2022. In total, the central midfielder played 45 matches for the Old Lady, scored three times, and completed 6 assists.

36-year-old Bonucci played 501 matches, scored 37 goals, won 8 Italian championships, and reached the Champions League final twice as part of Juventus from 2010 to 2023 (with a break of one season in Milan). He planned to end his career at the Turin club, but in the end he parted with it ugly and even planned to sue Juve.

Juventus took seventh place in Serie A at the end of last season. The team was fined 10 points in the championship for financial fraud, and subsequently UEFA suspended the club from participating in European competition.

The Old Lady is currently third in the championship with 17 points. In the next match, the Bianconeri will play away against leading Milan on October 22.
