The Juventus midfielder admitted guilt and made a deal with Italian prosecutors
Midfielder Juventus Nicolo Fagioli received seven month suspension for participating in illegal betting. The midfielder admitted guilt, and his lawyers made a deal with Italian prosecutors.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) significantly softened the punishment for the player; Nicolo faced a fine of 25 thousand euros and disqualification for up to three years. The admission of guilt, full cooperation with the prosecutor’s office and willingness to undergo treatment for gambling addiction influenced the FIGC’s decision.
Fagioli was under investigation for involvement in gambling through illegal online platforms. Italian police have identified a number of players who are suspected of participating in illegal betting. Earlier, Newcastle and Italy national team midfielder Sandro Tonali admitted his involvement in illegal gambling, the player intends to undergo psychotherapy.
The Italian Olympic Committee’s Code of Sports Justice prohibits professional football players from directly or indirectly betting on events held under the auspices of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), UEFA and FIFA.
22-year-old Fagioli is a graduate of the Juventus primavera, who made his way to the base of the Turin club in the fall of 2022. In total, the central midfielder played 45 matches for the Old Lady, scored three times, and completed 6 assists. In November last year, Fagioli made his debut in the first Italian national team.
Juventus is third in Serie A with 17 points. The Bianconeri’s next match will be away to Milan on October 22.
